Jess' parents wanted Jess to be like a typical Sikh female; getting good results, job, get married and have children. However, she doesn't want to do this. She wanted badly to play soccer. Instead of living to her parents' expectations, she does many things to pursue and achieve her dreams. This can be seen when she lied to her mother about wanting money to buy shoes for Pinky's wedding, but in actual fact, to buy her own soccer boots instead. Jess' actions are deceitful, but it shows that the expectations of our parents' are hard to be lived up to.
